Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), the country's favourite passenger car maker, has tasted an unparalleled success and ruling market share in the domestic auto market, over the years. The company's bread and butter segment has always been the small compact cars with which it has struck the perfect chords with domestic car enthusiasts.
Evidently, Maruti Suzuki has garnered a highly enviable market share with many iconic and breakthrough models in the country. The company struck gold with the legendary Maruti 800 subcompact city car that was introduced to Indian audience in the year 1983. The Maruti 800 entry-level small car was regularly listed as the best selling model list of domestic auto sector, until it was dislodged of its place by its successor- the Alto hatch at the start of century. The Maruti Suzuki Alto entry-level subcompact has been the best selling model over the last few years and contributes a major fraction of the company's total sales in the country.
Maruti Suzuki has recorded great successes with many influential cars in the country, namely Swift, Swift DZire, Ertiga, WagonR, Zen and the humble Omni van. At present, the company has been recording impressive sales of its Swift, DZire, recently launched Alto 800 and Ertiga in the Indian passenger car market. Further, Maruti Suzuki, the country's largest passenger car manufacturer, has always directed its focus on developing India specific models, which historically speaking has earned big dividends for the company. Recently, the combined sales of Swift premium hatch from both domestic markets and exports were recorded at 1.35 million units by Maruti Suzuki.
