Nexon Expert Review
Good Things
- Improved interiors
- Many new features
- Petrol-DCA combination
Could be Better
- Not very exciting to drive
- Space remains unchanged
Engine and Performance
Tata has finally given the Nexon a proper automatic gearbox and it’s a seven-speed, dual-clutch unit that we have seen in the Altroz. But unlike the Altroz, the DCA here gets to work with an engine that can make the most of the benefits that you get with a typical dual-clutch gearbox. Right off the bat, the Nexon turbo petrol feels way more energetic, it's more eager to get going and overall, the way it gains momentum it just feels effortless when you are doing low to mid RPMs.
The point here is that the DCA does a good job of masking this turbo engine's low end lag when its not on boost. It has always been quite obvious with the manual Nexon turbo and it was just as bad with the AMT gearbox that the old model had. Speaking of which, the old Nexon and this new model share the same 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine which makes 120bhp and 170Nm of torque. So it makes decent power and torque and in the real-world, it feels adequate. The Nexon with the DCA gearbox doesn’t come across as an underpowered SUV but it’s not the quickest either.
In our 0-100 performance test, it managed to reach 60kmph in 6.73 seconds and 100 in 13.27 seconds. Now the thing is, this engine doesn’t have a strong top end and it shows in the real world. For instance, in our acceleration test, the climb from 100 to 120 took over 5 seconds. This new 7-speed gearbox definitely improves the driving experience. It doesn't lurch or anything. In fact, it goes through the gears with a level of smoothness that we haven't seen in any Tata vehicle yet. If you are someone who drives every day but over short distances then you should consider this car with the DCA gearbox.
Ride and Handling
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. You have heard this phrase hundreds of times and it holds true for this new Nexon. After all, its foundations have always been solid. It has proven itself to be a safe car in its segment, it rides well and it's got predictable handling manners. No wonder Tata hasn't changed the platform for this new Nexon. Of course, this DCA model weighs more than the old Nexon AMT but besides tuning the suspension, Tata hasn't changed the ride and handling balance for the new Nexon.
Exterior Design
For what is basically a facelift, there have been so many changes to the new Tata Nexon that it’s a night and day difference. Of course, a lot of things like the floor pan, and the roof may have been carried over but let’s not forget this is a major facelift and there are a lot of sheet metal changes that have contributed to this new look for the Nexon.
Basically, it looks like a completely new car if you look at it from the front or the rear. The bonnet sits much higher than before, the front bumper has lots of sharp cuts and creases to it and it now incorporates the headlights. As for the daytime running lights, they may look as sleek as other Tata SUVs but here they also add a lot of visual drama. Moving to the rear, you could tell that the old Nexon has been around for a while. All the funky design elements like the taillights and the contrasting panel right below the rear glass now look quite old.
Thankfully, the rear has been majorly redone and the Nexon now looks properly modern. The highlights here include a rear wiper that’s hidden within the spoiler and the LED light bar that connects the taillights. It also puts up a little show when you lock or unlock the car.
Interior and Features
The interior of the 2023 Nexon bears no resemblance to the old model. But, more than the design itself, it’s the number of features that the new Nexon comes with is something that’s worth talking about straight away. It gets ventilated front seats, a JBL sound system, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 360 degree surround view system, touch-sensitive controls for the climate control, height adjustment for the driver as well as the co-driver’s seat, tire pressure monitoring system, paddle shifters for the DCA version, wireless charging pad and a fully digital instrument cluster which can also double up as a navigation display. So you are getting plenty of features for your money. Now the only couple of things that it's missing are ambient lighting and a start/stop feature for the engine.
Like the old Nexon, the placement for the USB ports isn't user-friendly at all and it will be a task to plug in any device. We would recommend you do it only when the car is stationary. Also, I like the fact that the digital instrument cluster for the driver can also display Google Maps in all its glory. However, on this pre-production car, it stopped working within a few minutes of our drive. Finally, some of the bits are from the old car so things like the ORVM controls, the window switch panel, the drive mode selector and the handbrake. Honestly, they all look their age next to everything else that’s new in this cabin. Moving to the positives, I like the new two-spoke steering wheel design that reminds me of the old Sierra and the Estate but of course it's all modern and it's got a Tata logo that glows up when you start the car. The steering wheel controls may look like they are touch-sensitive but these are physical buttons which I prefer. They are just easier to use when you are driving.
Speaking of other things that are nice, the wireless charging pad is conveniently placed, the visuals from the surround view cameras are of high quality and so is the audio from the JBL sound system. I like that there are so many sound modes and that you can configure the output exactly as per your liking. Overall space at the back is pretty much the same as before which means you get lots of space for your knees and your head. The seat itself is very comfortable and because you have this slight hump at the edge of the seat base, you also get a good amount of under-thigh support.
Conclusion
The new Tata Nexon has improved in several important areas. It looks way more upmarket and it’s packing a long list of additional features over the old model. Some might be disappointed by the fact that it is largely unchanged when it comes to the mechanicals but the new DCA gearbox adds a whole new degree of usability to the petrol automatic version. All things considered, the Nexon turbo petrol with the DCA gearbox makes for a great everyday car if your daily running isn’t a lot.

Engine and performance
The engine in question for this review is Tata’s 1.2-litre turbo-petrol, which in CNG guise produces 99bhp/170Nm and can only be had with a six-speed MT. We expect that Tata will at some point bring in an AT option for this car and that is expected to be the six-speed AMT. In its standard petrol guise, this engine with the same gearbox offers a claimed mileage of 17.44kmpl. Officially, Tata has not revealed a mileage figure but we subjected the car to a real-world mileage test and we got 11.65km/kg in the city and 17.5km/kg out on the highway, giving us a combined average of 13km/kg.
As a car to drive, the Nexon CNG is surprisingly fast. Usually, when you buy a CNG-powered car, you have to make a compromise on performance and driving experience in favour of mileage and efficiency. However, thanks to the turbocharged engine and the fact that you are getting 170Nm of torque, which is the highest now on offer for a CNG-powered vehicle, you don’t feel the lack of punch. In fact, you can easily do good three-digit highway speeds without much of a struggle.
The only thing that has increased is the vibrations on the steering wheel and gear lever when switching to CNG mode, which by the way can be done on the fly. All in all, you don’t feel like you have lost any noticeable performance. That’s an important thing when you consider that this 1.2-litre turbo turbocharged petrol is a fun engine to use and allows you to drive in an engaging manner. Thanks to the decently high torque figure, you don’t feel the extra weight of the CNG tanks. I mean yes, they do add extra weight to the vehicle and that’s something you will only notice if you are driving dynamically. For day-to-day city driving and on flat highways, you are not really going to have an issue.
The ride quality of the Nexon has always been on the firmer side and they have had to do a little extra to account for the weight of the tanks but that has not really affected the ride quality. It has always been one of the selling points of the Nexon, the ability to crunch everything in its path without much of a struggle and let you keep your pace constant. The steering feels overly assisted but that helps in masking the weight and size of the car and allows you to manoeuvre it easily. However, the rear visibility and the view out the left and right rear due to the massive C-pillars are still an issue. However, this top-spec model that we are reviewing gets a 360-degree camera and that does help quite a bit.
Exterior
There are no changes to the outside of this Tata Nexon CNG and it picks up all the design cues of the updated car that was launched in September 2023. Up front, you get the new low-set headlamps and LED DRLs that do a fancy dance when you turn on/off the car.
In the profile, you can see the coupe SUV roofline, new design for the 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, and the body-colour door handles. Finally, at the rear, you get the interconnected taillamps and an i-CNG badge at the right rear and in fact, that’s the only external indication that this is a CNG-powered Nexon.
Interior and features
The first row of this CNG-powered Tata Nexon is a decent space to be in. There is enough shoulder room and knee room but the headroom feels compromised due to the curved roofline. The highlights of the front are the two customisable digital displays. Both look very high quality and are quite nice to use. Another highlight is the futuristic climate control interface, which looks nice but does not offer haptic feedback. It also has a gloss black surface which looks premium but is a dust and fingerprint magnet. Space in the second row is good for two occupants, but put a third one in and they have to contend with the AC vents and reduced space. Features here include AC vents, USB C and USB A charging ports, and a centre armrest with cup holders.
The biggest victim of any car wanting to go with CNG power is the bootspace, I mean you have to store the CNG tank somewhere and since it is too bulky and heavy to be built into the body, it’s always the largest open space available that takes the hit.
But last year, Tata introduced its twin-cylinder technology where it split the 60-litre tank into two parts, placed it lower down and voila, more boot space! The regular Nexon gets a boot capacity of 382 litres, while this one offers a maximum of 321 litres. That’s 81 per cent of the full capacity, which is not a bad deal. This has of course come at the cost of the spare wheel that’s now been tethered to the bottom of the car.
The fully-loaded Fearless+S Nexon CNG, which is in our pictures has features like dual digital screens, 360-degree camera, ventilated front seats, climate control with rear AC vents, connected car technology, leatherette upholstery, power mirrors, power windows, and an auto-dimming IRVM. All versions of the Nexon get six airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, three-point seatbelts, and headrests for all occupants.
Conclusion
We have spent some time with the Tata Nexon CNG and let us sum up our experiences by looking at the pros and cons. On the side of pros, you don’t have to go for a lower-spec variant just because you have chosen a CNG-powered model. The car that you see in our review is a fully loaded model with all the bells and whistles that Tata has for the Nexon family. If you are willing to spend, then Tata has the means to provide for your needs. Tata has not compromised on performance and that’s something that should help this Nexon CNG sell well. You don’t feel like you have to take a step down just because you chose CNG power. The difference in performance between CNG and petrol power is very small and you don’t feel the lack of punch.
The next pro is that you don’t have to compromise on bootspace. Thanks to its twin-cylinder technology, Tata is able to liberate a sizeable amount of space in the back. 382 litres is what the standard cars get and this one with the CNG tanks has a capacity of 321 litres and that’s not a bad number at all. It has come at the cost of the spare tyre having to be mounted underneath like how you would on a body-on-frame vehicle. It does come with additional ground clearance to account for the tyre being mounted underneath.
On the side of cons, the fit and finish in some places leave a lot to be desired. The touchscreen system has a tendency to hang occasionally. Also, since this is essentially a variant of the Nexon, it comes with the design oddities that the car has like the roofline, bottle holders in the doors, and the hard-to-use cubby hole in front of the gear lever. At the time of writing this review, the prices ranged from Rs. 8.99 lakh to Rs. 14.59 lakh (ex-showroom). It has competition in the form of the Maruti Brezza CNG, Maruti Fronx CNG, and Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor CNG.
