Mercedes-Benz is almost ready with the production version of its much awaited flagship SUV. It will be called GLS and as the name suggests, it will resemble the S-Class in terms of quality and luxury. The new SUV will be an improvement on the current GL-Class and will take on the likes of Audi Q7, BMW X5, Land Rover Discovery and Range Rover Sport.

The vehicle has been spotted many times around the world and going by spy shots, the car is humungous in size. GLS is expected to be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The car will get the usual engine options as other SUVs currently in the German manufacturer’s stable along with a few AMG versions. Also, it will replace the beloved GL-Class and take over the mantle of flagship SUV from it.

Going by spy shots, the car will have loads of space inside and since it has “S” after “GL” there will be lots of gizmos installed to entertain its owners. There will be an all new infotainment system which will match that of S-Class. Mercedes has also planned a Maybach version of the vehicle. Maybach is an ultra luxury car brand of the company and it may give the GLS, a few bits of style cues.

Mercedes seems to be on the aggressive because the car that it will replace with GLS will be GL. The latter was given an extensive makeover in 2013 and it was showcased as whole new car. Only two years have passed and the company is revamping it again. There was a time when one version of a car used to go on for a decade before it received any major upgrade but in today’s cut throat competition, waiting for a decade was not possible for the German manufacturer.

Apart from the cars mentioned above, GLS will also have to face Porsche’s Cayenne. The AMG versions of the former will have to be powerful enough to take on the sports SUV from Stuttgart.
