The Indian market has seen many utility vehicles being launched in recent times with a number of them enjoying great success. Compact Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) like Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster have virtually turned around the fortunes of their respective manufacturers. The trend seems to have rubbed on to other car makers, who are planning to introduce their SUVs in the Indian market. The Japanese car maker Nissan too is contemplating the idea of bringing Qashqai SUV to India. It has been seen in the past few months that Nissan has working on a well thought plan to increase its market share through the launch of new vehicles. Sometime ago, Nissan showcased the Datsun Go in New Delhi.

Currently being sold in European markets, Nissan Qashqai is available in five-seat and seven-seat options. In the international market, the Qashqai SUV competes with the likes of Honda CR-V and Skoda Yeti. Buyers also have the option of choosing between front-drive and all-wheel drive versions. It comes in two engine variants, one petrol and one diesel. Besides, Nissan Qashqai has the distinction of being among the first crossovers introduced in the global auto market. It was showcased in 2006 at the Paris Motor Show. The crossover made a huge impact as it provided the performance of a utility vehicle along with the handling of a compact car. In the following years, Nissan enhanced features and improved the engine along with adding a seven-seater option.

Analysts feel that an all-new version of Nissan Qashqai will be introduced in India. Reports have claimed that the second-generation Qashqai, slated to launch internationally in 2014, was spotted doing test rounds in a few countries. The new version of this crossover is expected to be based on Common Module Family (CMF) platform, which has been developed by the Renault-Nissan alliance. Experts feel that Nissan will put a lot into the styling of the Qashqai to make it look more sporty and distinct from others in its segment. It is also expected that the new car will have a more powerful engine and better driving dynamics.

A lot is being discussed about Qashqai's price, which will depend on whether it is brought as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) or a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) unit. However, it is being strongly suggested that Qashqai will be placed above the Nissan Terrano. There has been no official announcement from the firm regarding the launch date of the Qashqai or any other details. However, rumours suggest that Nissan might introduce the crossover by 2014.
