The ever-growing hatchback segment accounted for 52 per cent of the sales of cars last month. Maruti Suzuki sold the most number of cars in March with the top three hatchbacks also being their vehicles. The evergreen Alto was first with 22,101 units sold followed by the Maruti WagonR which sold 14,577 units. Finishing a close third was the Maruti Swift with sales of 14,524 units.

Sedans made up 21 per cent of the overall sales and were the second highest selling body type in March. The Maruti Dzire remained first in this segment after selling 17,796 cars. The Honda City was in second place and the Maruti Ciaz saw an increase in sales as 5,480 units were sold, making it the third highest selling sedan.

SUVs only accounted for 14 per cent of sales last month. The Hyundai Creta led the pack with 8,163 units followed by Maruti’s latest offering, the Vitara Brezza. It generated a good response and sold 5,563 units. The Ford EcoSport was the third best selling SUV in March with 4,456 units leaving the showrooms.

Multi Utility Vehicles (MUVs) made up 13 per cent of the sales pie last month. The most popular MUV in March was the Maruti Omni with sales of 7,245 units. The Mahindra Bolero’s sales plummeted by over 40 per cent year on year with sales of 6,211 units. However, it still managed to be the second highest selling MUV in the month. The Maruti Eeco with sales of 5,651 units was third.

Even though new models dominated sales in every other segment, the MUV category was still ruled by the old guns. Newer cars like the Renault Lodgy and Honda’s Mobilio struggled to rack up the numbers.
