It’s no secret that Audi is working on a handful of all-new SUVs. One of those products will be the new-generation Audi Q5 that has been spied testing on international roads. Redesigned from the scratch, the new Q5 will be manufactured at San Jose Chiapa in Mexico. It will take on the likes of Mercedes-Benz GLK, Range Rover Evoque and BMW X3.
The new model will be based on the latest MLB platform that also underpins the new Q7. This platform consists of a high amount of cast aluminum elements and high-strength steel, making it 100kgs lighter than the existing model. It will also aid to its fuel efficiency and handling. The spyshots suggest that the new Q5 will draw its design inspiration from the new Q7. It will feature a large front grille and air vents, rectangular headlamps and prominent wheel arches. While, the clamshell tailgate with integrated tail-lamps will remain unchanged. The crossover might also be offered with a choice of bi-xenon headlights or Matrix LED units.
Inside the cabin, the car is likely to be equipped with new digital gauge cluster, a freestanding 7-inch display and a rotary control, and plenty of tech-savvy features. Features like an 8.3-inch display MMI Plus system with touchpad and rotary control will be available only on the top-end model. Powering the new-gen Q5 will be a four-cylinder, and V6 petrol and diesel engine lineup.
Developed by Audi and Porsche, the V6 petrol mill will be offered with three transmission options – a 6-speed manual, a 7-speed S Tronic double-clutch automatic and an 8-speed torque converter automatic. A plug-in hybrid version with a 2.0-litre petrol engine and two electric motors might also be on offer. The crossover will be available with both RWD (rear-wheel drive) and AWD (all-wheel drive) systems.
