It has been learnt that D4 variants of Volvo’s S60 and XC60 will get a mechanical tweak. Sources have revealed that the auto giant will replace the present 2.0 litre, five cylinder engine outputting top power of 163 Bhp by a 2.0 litre, four cylinder powertrain. The new motor is capable of developing a peak torque of 181 Bhp, however torque output remains same at 400 Nm. These vehciles are already available with the four cylinder engine option in global markets, since Volvo offers XC60 and S60 in India as a CBU, hence this tweak is imminent.

The outgoing engine was inducted as a replacement of Volkswagen sourced diesel motors in 2001. Volvo’s new 2.0 litre, four cylinder engine is claimed to be more fuel efficient and tuned to deliver improved performance. Besides equipping a new engine in XC60 and S60 sedans Volvo will also incorporate a new eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission ditching the previous six-speed automatic gearbox. S60 will continue to be offered with a front wheel drive system while XC60 flaunts the All Wheel Drive system.

Volvo has developed the new 2.0 litre for cylinder engine as a part of its Drive-E engine family. The Drive-E engines will be developed to offer varied power outputs, instead of offering engines with different range of displacements. The power output of this new 2.0 litre diesel engine will vary from 120 Bhp to 231 Bhp. Speculations are rife that the 231 Bhp version of the engine will replace the 2.4 litre five-cylinder engine in future. Besides this, the Swedish auto maker plans to use these engines (Drive-E engines) in hybrid cars.
