At the Formula One race track of the Fuji Speedway in Oyama, Toyota Motor President, Akio Toyoda recently revealed the company's latest 200 hp Scion FR-S or Toyota 86.

In an attempt to spice up its current utilitarian offerings like Toyota Corolla and Camry, the Tokyo-based automobile multinational has come up with its 200 hp rear-wheel-drive sporty car, impressing thousands of sports car fanatics.

The powerful sports car, which took around five years of development, will be offered to car enthusiasts in Japan under the name Toyota 86 and sold as Scion FR-S in the American automobile market. Toyoda paid close attention to the car during its development years and is relying on the new model to enhance the auto brand's performance credentials.

The new Scion FR-S has been developed jointly by Toyota Motors and Subaru, wherein Toyota is responsible for the styling and Subaru has assimilated a 2-litre, four cylinder Double Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) boxer engine to it.

The Scion FR-S is capable of hitting a maximum speed of 228 kmph and can reach up to the 62 kmph mark in just 6 seconds, according to Toyota Chief Engineer, Tetsuya Tada. The company refrained from disclosing the price range and the expected fuel economy of the new model. However, the estimated price is expected to be around 2 million yen, which equals $26,000.

Furthermore, Tada also said, “The goal is to price the car in a range that would be affordable to recent college graduates.”

Talking about its engineering, Tada added, “A lot of cars these days are controlled by computer chips, and that leads to a sense of the car driving you, instead of you driving the car. We decided to use as few computer controls as possible. We wanted to go back to basics.”

Thus, the company foresees a positive response from racing fanatics, as a power-defining and advanced new model Toyota Scion FR-S is here to rule.
