Nissan Motor India Private Limited (NMIPL), the 100 per cent subsidiary of Nissan Motor Company, announced on 1st June 2012 that the company registered sales of 3138 cars during May 2012. With these figures, Nissan registered a growth of 98 per cent on year-on-year (YOY) basis when evaluated against 1,588 units sold in the same period last year. The decent sales figures are mainly driven by the company’s two iconic models, Sunny, a sedan and the Micra, a premium hatchback.

In September 2011, Nissan introduced Sunny in the Indian auto industry, which emerged as a major patron in company’s comprehensive sales recorded in the past few months. Since the launch of Sunny in Indian auto market, the company delivered its 18,753 units till May 2012. The demand of diesel version of Sunny has reported decent surge in the past few months. Nissan Sunny is currently manufactured at Nissan’s technological advanced production plant based in Chennai.

Ishida Takayuki, Managing Director, NMIPL, quoted, “Despite the fact that the auto industry has been going through some uncertainty in view of the recent fuel price hike and general economic growth, our sales have remained strong. This performance has been supported by the strength and diversity of our model range. It will further expand with the launch of Evalia later in the year, and we are confident that our sales will continue to grow.”

Mentioning the importance of Indian market, Nitish Tipnis, Director, Marketing and Sales, Hover Automotive India (Nissan’s sales and marketing partner in India), commented that “Despite the current challenging market, India remains of key strategic importance to Nissan and represents a significant opportunity for growth. By placing the customer at the heart of everything we do, Nissan is continuing to develop within the Indian market, increasing sales, growing our retail network and widening our product portfolio.”

Recently, the officials of Nissan announced that the company will also introduce its competitive brand Datsun in the Indian auto industry in 2014. It is anticipated that Datsun will be a major contributor in Nissan’s Indian scheme, ‘Nissan Power 88’. This strategy incorporates an exhaustive six year plan, which will pace up Nissan’s approach in developing markets and new segments of the industry. The vehicles launched under Datsun brand will be bound to reflect contemporary and generous designs to remain parallel with the requirements of domestic market. Cars under the badge of Datsun will be designed in local markets and will surely hold latest technology and world-class features.

Besides, Nissan also showcased its first urban utility vehicle, Evalia, at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo held in January. It is expected that the launch of Evalia will further strengthen the innovative product portfolio of Nissan in India. The car will go on the production track at Nissan’s Chennai facility before the end of this year.
