Suzuki Power-Trains India Limited (SPIL), the engine unit supplier to the Indian auto giant Maruti Suzuki, has been struggling with a sharp decline in output as the workers at the plant have claimed to be deliberately slowed production to register their protest over unsatisfactory resolution of the labour unrest of last month.

The engine production at the SIPL’s plant has dropped to mere 60 percent of the production in the normal days. It is to be mentioned here that SIPL is the sole supplier of the engine units to the Maruti Suzuki and a decline in output can make the situation worse for the car maker that has already been struggling to bring down the mounting waiting periods of its popular cars.

In a statement given to ET, Subey Singh Yadav, president of the workers' union, said, "There have been no proactive steps from the SPIL management to speedily address workers' issues and sort out the matter at the earliest." He added that pending enquiries against him and his two other colleagues will not help in fostering the trust between management and workers.

It is to be mentioned here that workers of the Manesar plant had adopted the same go-slow strategy to protest which resulted in a more then 50 percent decline in the company’s total output. The slowed-down production had forced the car maker to come-up with ‘good conduct bond’ which was made necessary to be signed by each worker before entering the unit.
