After witnessing a massive growth in sales in last two years, the luxury car segment in India has now started feeling the heat due to a slowdown in sales. In July 2011, the Indian car market dipped 16 percent as compared to sales registered in the same month previous year. This was the steepest fall in the Indian car market in last 30 months.

The impact of slowing down sales in the industry is clearly affecting the sales in luxury car segment, which had been enjoying a joy ride in the Indian market since last one year. All of the top luxury car makers in the Indian auto market including Mercedes Benz, BMW and Audi, have registered a slowdown in sales during this month. While the sales of German car maker Mercedes witnessed its first dip in sales in last three years, BMW and Audi also witnessed a slump in sales during the last few months.

In a bid to counter this slowdown, luxury car makers are now coming-up with new entry level cars in their portfolio, to attract more buyers. The vehicles like BMW X1 and Audi A4, which are the starting range vehicles in the respective portfolios, have been contributing heavily in the sales of their brands.

The sales of Mercedes Benz decreased 17 percent to 478 units in the month of July 2011, while the sales of BMW and Audi dipped by 57 percent and 69 percent respectively during this month.
