      Institute of Driving and Traffic Research inaugurated by Chief Minister, Shri Bhupinder Singh Hooda

      Maruti Suzuki’s Institute of Driving and Traffic Research (IDTR) has been inaugurated in Rohtak by Hon’ble Chief Minister of Haryana, Shri Bhupinder Singh Hooda on 23rd April 2012. In the occasion, Shinzo Nakanishi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, several senior state government dignitaries and senior members of Haryana Cabinet were present. This driving training facility is a partnership between the Haryana Government and India’s leading car maker.

      For promoting road safety in the country, the company is laying its initiatives in terms of the IDTR. More than 20,000 people would be trained annually by IDTR Rohtak in safe driving. The company after setting up the IDTR Rohtak will increase its road safety training infrastructures across India to include over 200 Maruti Suzuki Driving schools and 6 IDTRs.

      International Road Federation has put forward a report according to which, about Rs. 100,000 Crore (Rs One lac Crore) losses is faced by India every year because of road accidents. These accidents take around 160,000 lives every year in the country. Out of the total global vehicles population, India has only 1 percent share. However, 10 percents of accidents in the world happens in India. Drivers fault causes 78 percent of the road accidents.

      The need of the present society according to Maruti Suzuki is lowering fatalities & injuries and enhancing road safety. As a corporate social responsibility, road safety initiatives of Maruti Suzuki is operated at two levels

      Maruti Driving Schools: The Company establishes these driving schools partnering with its dealers. At present, there are more than 200 Maruti Driving Schools across the country.

      IDTR: The IDTR’s are established by Maruti Suzuki in collaboration with the state governments. Set up under Private Public Partnership (PPP) model, these centres have their own driving tracks. Along with the Rohtak IDTR, the number of IDTRs reaches to 6. Out of these, one each is in Gujarat and Uttarakhand. Haryana and Delhi NCR have two IDTRs each.

      Advanced driving simulators and curriculum for driving training supports the IDTR and MDS driving training models. The MDS solely concentrates on personal car driving but the IDTR has broader responsibility. It provides training for commercial driving for buses, trucks and other heavy motor vehicles including three wheelers and taxis. The company by this special infrastructure has provided proper set up to driving training in India.

      Maruti Suzuki’s experience for Road Safety Training

      · Maruti Suzuki set up its first IDTR in Delhi in the year 2000 and since that it has been working on road safety

      · Through its flagship National Road Safety Mission (NRSM) programme, a formal structure to its road safety initiatives has been provided by the company in 2008

      · Over 500,000 people have been trained by Maruti Suzuki under its National Road Safety Mission. Out of these, 140,000 trainees have been sponsored by Maruti Suzuki as a special gesture

      · The 500,000th trainee was from Sirsa Haryana

      · From the MDS at M/s Shakti Motors Sirsa, Mrs. Magan Kanwar of Sirsa learnt driving training

      · Maruti Driving Network: Over 200 Maruti Driving Schools (with dealers)

      · Road Safety Knowledge Centres: Maruti Suzuki with an aim to provide assistance to local police with traffic management and training in Gurgaon, Faridabad and Karnal established Road Safety Knowledge Centres (RSKC). In order to encourage safe driving habits and enhance traffic education in these cities, the new platform has been set up. The centre is also responsible for offering special training to traffic violators. Incidentally, Haryana was the first state to get this facility
