Talking about the fastest hatchback to feature in India, Volkswagen Polo GT TDI certainly tops the list. It has been not long since the car made its head start in the country and it has already earned the appreciation of many car enthusiasts. Polo GT TDI is a performance oriented model, based on the standard Polo hatchback and is aimed at car lovers who want a power packed engine performance from their hatchbacks. Coming to the mechanicals of Polo GT TDI, it has got a 4-cylinder TDI engine, which has a displacement of 1598 cc. With this engine, the car generates a maximum power that equals to 103 bhp apart from attaining a peak torque of 250 Nm. The diesel mill of the car is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox that further transfers the power to its rear wheels. On assessing the figures of Hyundai i20, which is the nearest rival to Polo GT TDI, it was found that car of Volkswagen was far better. The 1.4-litre CRDI unit of i20 gives away 88 bhp of power and 224 Nm of torque, which is quite less on comparing with Polo GT TDI.
Coming down the mid-size sedan segment, it was surprising to see Hyundai Verna Fluidic emerging as the winner. Launched in the year 2011, the current generation Verna is one of the fastest mid-size sedans in the country. Deriving power from the 1.6-litre common-rail VGT diesel engine, it gives away 128 bhp of peak power and torque of up to 259 Nm. As claimed by the company, car reaches the mark of 0 to 100 kmph in just 10.54 seconds. While talking about the figures of its rivals, they stand at 11.33 seconds for Vento and 11.44 seconds for Rapid. It must be noted that Verna Fluidic is not only fast but boasts of a powerful engine.
Taking the premium saloon segment into account, it was found that tough competition lies between Honda Accord and Volkswagen Passat. Both the cars are equipped with powerful engines that are capable of hitting high speeds too frequently. In Accord, Honda has given a 2.4-litre i-VTEC engine, which gives away 178 bhp of highest power and 222 Nm of peak torque. On the other hand, Volkswagen Passat is powered by a 4-cylinder 2.0-litre engine that generates 168 bhp of power and 350 Nm of torque. So it is quite hard to differentiate as to which car is faster and powerful, but it must be mentioned that Honda Accord maintains a slight edge over its counterpart.
