According to a report, BMW is working on an SUV coupe - the X2 - that will be based on the X1. The report further says that the vehicle is already under development phase at the company's R&D center in Munich, and will make its debut as a concept at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.

Based on the X1 platform, the X2 SUV will share a uniquely styled steel body from its larger siblings – X4 and X6. This sporty model will feature a coupe-like silhouette with angular tailgate, and a five-door layout. Similar to the X1, the X2 will initially be available with four-cylinder engine options. Though, BMW might add a more economical three-cylinder powertrain to the lineup within a year of its launch. Transmissions on offer will be a 6-speed manual and an 8-speed automatic combined with AWD and FWD drivetrain capabilities.

An M Performance variant with BMW’s new B48 engine might also be on offer. It’s the same powertrain that does duty to the 2 Series Active Tourer. This B48 engine produces a standard power output of 228bhp, but it will be tuned for the SUV’s performance version. BMW engineers might tweak its induction system or other components to make it more efficient and powerful.

While the BMW X2 M Performance will rival against the Audi RS Q3, the regular version of the SUV will take on the new Range Rover Evoque. Just like the BMW X1, the X2 SUV Coupe will be manufactured at the company’s Regensburg facility in Germany.
