The automobile industry is soon becoming a battleground for hybrid cars as most companies sweat it out to make a mark in the Prius dominated segment. The world definitely needs a lot more hybrid cars in the near future, going by the decaying oil reserves and the devastating effect that petrol and diesel cars have been doing to the environment. If this is the harbinger of things to come, then definitely hybrid cars will reign supreme in the near future.

BMW seems to have got the hint nice and early as there are reports that the manufacturer is looking forward to introduce an ultramodern and innovative plug-in hybrid drivetrain in its upcoming range. The sedan will be based on the existing 5-series platform and would be manufactured as well as developed at the company’s existing manufacturing plants. It is rumoured that the new model will don the i7 or i5 tag and will feature a combination of a petrol engine as well as two electric motors. Depending on the roads and situation, the car will be manoeuvrable on rear-wheel, front-wheel or on all four wheels. Complete electric mode range is reported to be at 80 miles.

The German manufacturer has plans to take on American Tesla in its own courtyard. BMW also plans to launch a four-door hybrid sedan by 2018. The stylish and appearance will be a mixed of the current generation 6 Series Gran Coupe and the upcoming next generation 7 Series. As far as the segment is concerned, the German manufacturer has adjudicated the perfect time to launch itself into this category.
