The biggest premium car maker in the world, BMW is recalling approximately 1.3 million cars across the globe to rectify an issue with the battery cable cover located in the trunk of the vehicle. This recall concerns the 5-Series and 6-Series models built by the leading German automotive company from the year 2003 till 2010. In Germany alone, this recall has affected as many as 2,90,000 vehicles.

A statement issued by the company said that the concerned battery cable cover may not be placed ideally, which can affect the functioning of the electrical systems of cars. In some cases, the car may not be able to start and may even catch fire in extreme cases. However, it added that no cases of accidents or harm to passengers due this issue had been reported to it.

Presently, the manufacturer is in the process of notifying the customers in writing. It said that customers can go to a BMW partner workshop for a free repair procedure, which will take just half an hour. However, it did not disclose the costs that it will bear due to this rectification procedure.

This process is being considered a precautionary measure since there have been no unfortunate incidents due to this issue till now. The company has issued this recall just a month after it was slapped with a fine of $3 million by the US safety regulatory authority for reporting safety defects later than the norm.
