Ford Motors, the American automotive giant, has committed itself towards saving conservation of water and recycling wastewater. This has been lauded as an exemplary step, a feat that others are encouraged to replicate.
Apart from this water saving policy at Ford units, its assembly plant at Marginalia Nagar, Chennai should be considered a model. This facility endeavours to achieve zero discharge and is working on innovative water conservation technologies that will assist it in saving as much water as possible in its operations.
This effort has ensured that the company has used 25 per cent lesser water in the past 10 years while manufacturing each vehicle. Counted among the leading car makers of the world, Ford now wants to bring this figure to 30 per cent in the next 5 years in a bid to conserve more water.
The water consumption level at the car maker’s plant at Chennai is among the least in all of its facilities, using just 1.16 cubic metres for manufacturing each car. The facility makes use of wastewater steams and subjects water from several operations to a series of techniques so it can be reused as and when required.
