BMW, the German luxury car maker, is working on a new entry level luxury sedan, which will be based on the 1-Series hatchback. While its arch rivals Audi and Mercedes-Benz have already introduced their entry-level sedans in the form of A3 and CLA, BMW is yet to bring in a vehicle in this segment. Both the A3 and the CLA are available in our market and are doing good business for their makers. In order to join the league, BMW has fastened the process of developing 1-Series sedan which has recently been spotted in China.

It is expected that the BMW 1 Series sedan will be unveiled by the end of this year or by the early next year. The India debut is expected around 2016-17, which we believe is little late. Codenamed the F52, the sedan is built on the UKL platform that also underpins the new generation MINI. This front wheel drive model will share its styling and components with the hatchback sibling.

The current BMW 1-Series hatchback is offered in both petrol and diesel fuel options in the Indian market. The sedan version is also likely to share its engine lineup with the hatchback. The gasoline model gets the 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engine that is good for 136bhp and 220Nm of torque, while the oil burner is the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, twin-power turbo unit that produces 143bhp and 320Nm of torque. The company might also add new and more powerful engines to compete well against the Audi A3 and the Mercedes CLA.
