In a bid to expand its footprint in India, the Indian arm of German auto maker, Volkswagen, is planning to invest a whopping Rs 800 crore in domestic market on development of new products. Besides rendering new offerings for the Indian customers, the company is also pondering to tweak its existing models available for sale in India. To price its cars competitively, VW is also focusing on localisation of components and parts. Volkswagen India will spend some part of its investment on localisation as it will help it achieve affordable pricing.

From the current portfolio, Volkswagen will roll out Polo hatchback and Vento sedan in new avatars. Among the premium offerings, Volkswagen might also bring the new generation Passat in India.

Industry insiders opine that in wake of increasing market share in thriving Indian car market, Volkswagen will bring new cars too. According to media reports, the company is planning to tap into compact segment with a couple of new models including a compact sedan and a compact SUV. Apart from these two, a compact hatchback could also be developed for the domestic market. While the sub-four meter SUV could be Taigun which the company unveiled during 2014 Delhi Motor Show, the other two vehicles, a sub-four-meter sedan and a compact hatchback could be launched under the company’s low cost brand. Volkswagen has been evaluating options to launch its low cost brand aimed at exponentially growing markets like India. Of late, rumours were doing the rounds that Volkswagen has given a green signal to its low cost brand. However, details on it are yet not out; but hopefully, the company will soon reveal information on the same.
