      Toyota unveils new TNGA Global vehicle platform

      Toyota has unveiled the new TNGA global vehicle platform. The company said that the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) will “greatly improve core vehicle performance and product appeal” with the help of lighter and more compact components and lower centre of gravity. The Japanese automaker expects that approximately 50 per cent of its vehicles sold worldwide in 2020 to feature the new flexible global architecture.

      The TNGA platform will adopt a range of new motors, claimed to offer improved fuel efficiency of by approximately 25 per cent and increase overall power output by more than 15 per cent. The company also expects that this platform will help in improving the overall fuel efficiency of its hybrid vehicle systems by more than 15 per cent. The TNGA system will also help in reducing the investments needed to produce new models.

      Toyota's new Global vehicle platform will be used in a mid-sized front-wheel-drive vehicle by the end of this year. This platform will be followed by specific new platforms for front-wheel-drive compact and large vehicles along with rear-wheel-drive vehicles. Similar kind of strategy was adopted by different automakers globally. The other flexible architectures introduced including VW's MQB, Audi's MLB, Renault-Nissan CMF, Volvo Scalable platform architecture and Mercedes' MFA and MRA platforms.
