The world’s cheapest car Tata Nano marked its entry into the Sri Lankan market on Sunday. This is Nano’s first structural export from India since its launch in March 2009.

The car has been priced about three times higher in the Lankan market as compared to what it costs in the India. The Nano model carries a price tag of 9,25,000 Sri Lankan rupees ($8,486) in Sri Lanka as compared to its Indian price of $3,000.

In a statement given on Sunday, an official of Dimo, the Colombo agent for Tata, said, "We have started accepting bookings from today for the first 500 cars imported to Sri Lanka." He added that the price of the car is high in the country due to high import duties and local taxes.

Mr. P.M. Telang, Tata's managing director, said in a recent statement, that the company has already formulated plans for its introduction in several countries, to be implemented over the next few years.

In coming years, Tata Motors will also roll-out a deluxe version on Nano in the European market which will be equipped with a range of new comfort & convenience and safety features. The car is currently manufactured at the company’s Sanand Plant in Gujarat.
