Tata Nano Review

Summary

Launched in 2009, the Tata Nano created buzz as ‘world’s cheapest car’ in the market, but the same strategy went against the brand and its sales started falling. After introducing various updates and variants to the hatchback, the home-grown automaker replaced the entire lineup with the new Nano GenX AMT that received a few cosmetic updates and an AMT (automated manual transmission) gearbox. The refreshed Nano became India’s most affordable automatic car. The exterior styling of the hatchback is revised with new smoke headlamps with black bezel and large circular fog lamps, front and rear bumpers with Infinity motif grille and other styling elements. Perhaps, the most significant update is the open-able boot that makes it more practical than the old one. The interior, too, looks refreshing with new interior trims and plenty of additional features. Powering the hatchback is the same old 624cc, two-cylinder MPFI petrol engine, but now it’s more refined and frugal.  Transmissions on offer are a new 5-speed AMT (automated manual transmission) gearbox and a 4-speed manual.

Further to this, read Tata Nano Road Test details by our expert.

Exterior

The new Nano GenX with significant cosmetic updates looks sportier than the old model. Though, it retains its original shape.  The car features new smoke headlamps with black bezel and large circular fog lamps, front and rear bumpers with Infinity motif grille, a piano black hood garnish and integrated tailgate spoiler. The open-able bootlid makes it more practical than before. The hatchback gets a new color - Sangria Red - along with the regular shades.

Interior

With various new features, the new GenX has surely become a lot richer and more up-market product than its predecessor. It gets new-generation Tata signature electric power-assisted steering wheel with active return function and speed sensitivity, and first-in-segment color themes. Other features include Zest/ Bolt-inspired steering, first-in-segment digital information display, an Amphistream music system with USB, Aux-in and Bluetooth connectivity, surround sound effect with 4-speakers, externally adjustable ORVMs, front power windows, new interior trims, central locking remote and burglar alarm.

Engine and Transmission

The 2015 Tata Nano GenX is powered by the same old 624cc, two-cylinder MPFI petrol engine that produces a maximum power of 38bhp and a peak torque of 51Nm. Though, it’s more refined and fuel efficient than the old unit, thanks to the new cylinder head and aluminum block. A 4-speed manual transmission is available on XM and XE trims, while the 5-speed AMT (automated manual transmission) gearbox is offered on EasyShift Automatic XMA and XTA variants.

Performance and Handling

The powertrain is more refined, fuel efficient, and has improved NVH levels. The car drives well at sedate speed, and delivers adequate performance. Drivability is quite impressive with AMT gearbox, but it doesn’t show a quick progress. With increased fuel tank capacity (24-litres), the hatchback offers a range of over 450kms. The light steering, anti-roll for high speed stability and SUV-like ground clearance further enhance its handling and driving dynamics. The ride quality is good, but it gets bouncy on rough surfaces.

Braking System

Similar to the old model, the new GenX Nano has drum brakes on both front and rear axles. Though, the front brakes need to be updated with disc brakes. The stopping power isn’t up to the mark, and brake pedal still lacks the feel.

Mileage

The 624 cc CNG - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 18 kmpl in city and 22 kmpl on highways, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 19 kmpl on urban roads and 22 kmpl and freeways, respectively.

Safety Features

With advanced structural stability, the new Nano GenX ensures a safe and confident drive. It comes equipped with impact cushioning crumple zone, central locking, booster assisted brakes, central high mount stop lamp, side intrusion beams, hazard warning switch and additional reinforced body structure for enhanced frontal crash protection.

Verdict

With new styling, rich features and refined engine, the Tata Nano GenX is certainly an improved product than the old one. Though, the major highlight is the new AMT gearbox that makes it India’s most affordable automatic car.

Competition

Tata Nano GenX Vs Maruti Suzuki Alto 800

The new Tata Nano GenX is more practical and up-market than the old one, thanks to the larger fuel tank capacity, open-able hatch and refined engine. It’s the most fuel efficient and affordable car to buy. Though, the braking performance and handling are mediocre. The Maruti Suzuki Alto 800, on the other hand, has basic design and features, coupled with efficient engine.

Pros

  1. Compact and easy to drive in city
  2. Spacious and well-equipped cabin
  3. More refined and fuel efficient engine
  4. Well-controlled NVH levels

Cons

  1. Highway performance
  2. AMT gearbox lag
  3. Still lacks internally adjustable rearview mirrors and front disc brakes

Tata Nano Review : The BIG small wonder Increase in population, crowded streets, traffic chaos and never decreasing fuel rates. These are some of the issues, which we are plagued with. The big solution to this is something small. Something that can give the already stressed public a breather. Tata Motors, decided to bring a solution to this by giv....

The design of Tata Nano is surely an impressive one the proof being it gets a second look always. We had the Sunshine Yellow shade (seems Yellow has become our favorite after the Skoda Laura RS review). Though yellow looks the most fresh and cute shade, Tata offers 5 other color shades too namely Racing Red, Ivory White, Summer Blue, Champagne.... Read More
