The Renault Kwid that was unveiled on May 21, 2015, is now snapped testing in Chennai. The hatchback will be launched in India in September. The Kwid will be manufactured with 98% of localization at the Renault-Nissan alliance plant in Chennai.
Powering the Kwid will be an all-new 800cc, three-cylinder petrol engine that is paired with a 5-speed manual and an AMT (automated manual transmission) gearbox. Anticipated to be the best in class, this engine is expected to produce a class-leading power of 57bhp, and 130Nm of torque. Renault claims that the Kwid will deliver best-in-class fuel efficiency. At a later stage, a 1.0-litre diesel engine might also be added to the lineup, though the company hasn't officially said anything about this yet.
Wearing the crossover-like stance, the Kwid looks lot better than most of its rivals. It will be based on the modular CMF-A platform, and feature a high ground clearance for better handling. On the front end, the hatchback sports sweptback headlamps, a dual-slat grille and sporty fog lamps on the lower bumper.
Other styling features include black wing mirrors, cladding on sides, 13-14-inches wheels and manually-operated outside rear view mirrors. The hatchback measures 3,680mm in length and long and 1,580mm in width. Features on list are a digital instrument cluster, first-in-segment 7-inches touch-screen, front power windows, chrome air vents, MediaNAV with navigation functions and radio and Bluetooth connectivity, optional driver airbag, etc.
Since the Renault Kwid will be pitted against the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 and Hyundai Eon, it is expected to be priced between Rs. 3 lakh – Rs. 4 lakh (ex-showroom).
