Indian automobile market is price sensitive where the customers are more interested in the products which provide them best utility in terms of money. As the Indian customers are more interested in compact MPV's in the recent times, Maruti India's new launch, Ertiga ramped up 40,000 bookings.

The new Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) has been launched by the second largest car exporter in the country, with a 1.4 Litre K-series petrol engine and a 1.3 litre Multi-jet diesel engine. The petrol unit is built to deliver power of 94 bhp whereas the diesel engine produces 90 bhp. Starting price for the petrol model is around Rs. 5.89 lacs whereas the diesel variant is priced Rs. 7.30 lacs.

With the massive bookings against its name, the popularity of the Ertiga has increased. Credit may go to some production constraints or popularity of Maruti cars but this is the case with every new launch from Maruti. Due to 40,000 bookings and increasing demand, waiting period of some selected diesel models of Ertiga have increased to more than six months. It may harm Maruti India against the competition from the likes of Toyota Innova, Mahindra Xylo and Chevrolet Tavera.

The major reason behind the high booking figure of the vehicle is its low price than other models of the same segment. Ertiga offers same wheelbase as that of the Toyota Innova at a lower price.

With the monthly production capacity of just 6,000 units at Maruti, the wait will be tough for the customers. However, there is no reason for Maruti to feel threatened since there is no other product in the market with similar attributes as the Ertiga. In the absence of competition, customers are less likely to cancel their bookings even if they have to wait longer.

Meanwhile, the car maker is aggressively trying to meet the ever-increasing demand at its production unit. Maruti may engage the production facilities at Manesar and Gurgaon and slash the waiting duration considerably after the production of Ertiga starts on higher scale.
