General Motors Looking for New Options for Its Electric Cars

General Motors India is planning to go ahead with its plans to produce its electric car, only this time it is going to do it on its own. It had signed MoU last year with Reva Electric to produce electric variant of Chevrolet Spark in India. The deal fell apart and GM India announced that it will not produce the car with Reva after Mahindra acquired stake in the company.

General Motors will introduce its plug-in hybrid vehicle Chevrolet Volt in the American market by December this year. However, it denied of any such plans for India stating that the Indian car market is at a very nascent stage for such plug-in hybrids. “The country is still not ready for such plug-in hybrid vehicles. The expensive Chevrolet Volt may get few Indian buyers, who are fascinated to drive a green car. It will certainly not be a huge success in a sensitive market such as India,” GM India vice-president (marketing, sales and after sales) Ankush Arora said.

According to General Motors, India lacks sufficient infrastructural support in the country for electric cars to become successful. Several auto makers in India have been in talks with the government to develop proper infrastructural support for electric cars to be commercially viable in the country.
