Audi A3 sedan version likely to come to India in 2013

The new A3 luxury sedan from Audi has been spotted undergoing testing in various parts of Europe. This vehicle from the German auto maker is expected to go on sale during late 2013 in India. As per the pictures, it can be seen that the A3 is going through the initial stages of development. The car is expected to borrow styling cues from the A3 concept that was showcased during the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

The A3 is expected to be built upon the common MQB platform (German acronym for Modular Transverse Matrix). A3 was originally a premium hatchback, built over many generations since 1996, and has been a very successful vehicle for Audi. It is the first time that this is being converted into a sedan and has many prospective buyers interested in the same.

Length of this sedan would be 4.4 m, which would make it slightly smaller than the A4 sedan (4.76 m). Competition would be against established players such as Volkswagen Passat, Skoda Superb, Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry. Expect this vehicle to be priced between Rs. 22 – 28 lakhs.

Various engine options could be available with the new A3. India is likely to get a 1.8 litre TFSI (petrol) engine producing 160bhp and a 2.0 litre TDI engine (diesel) producing 140bhp. The launch of this vehicle is in line with Audi's aggressive expansion plans for India.

Developing markets such as India have a lot of scope for new launches by reputed luxury car maker Audi. In terms of sales numbers, Audi is currently at the number two spot among luxury car makers, whereas BMW is numero uno in India. Sedan vehicles by Audi have a prefix A attached to them, whereas SUVs (Sports Utility Vehicles) have the prefix Q.
