Both superbikes feature the crossplane crankshaft, and the company has retained the legendary R1 name from the older versions. The new R1 and R1 M are powered by a four-cylinder, liquid-cooled 998cc engine that churns out 200PS of top power and 112.4Nm of top torque. With the addition of ram air effect, this engine produces slightly more power. New features added to the bikes are slipper clutch, new crankshaft, Titanium con rods and a larger airbox, etc. The motorcycles weigh just 199kg thanks to new cast magnesium alloys and asymmetric aluminium frame. Both the bikes come with a minimum ground clearance of 130mm and have a fuel tank capacity of 17-litres.

The new Yamaha YZF-R1 seems inspired from the company's MotoGP bike, the M1. The bike shares features like tank gills, faired-in small headlamps, et with the M1. Key features on offer with this bike are - slide control system, anti-Lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution, launch control, Wheelie control, inertial measurement unit, etc. It will rival against the likes of Kawasaki Ninja H2, Honda CBR 1000RR, BMW S1000RR, and the Suzuki GSX-R1000.
