The Indian unit of the Japanese bike maker Yamaha is planning to expand its footprints in the rural market in the country by offering new affordable models. So far, the company has a strong presence in the urban market, and now it is aiming a similar approach towards rural markets.

In a recent statement given to PTI, Mr. Roy Kurian said, "We have so far seen good sales in urban areas, mainly in the big cities due to our image as a premium bike-maker. Now to further accelerate growth, we will strengthen our presence in the rural markets."

Yamaha India had sold over 3.8 lakh units of its two-wheelers in the Indian market in year 2010. This year around, the company is looking forward to take this figure to 5.2 lakh units.

While further elaborating the company’s strategy for expansion in the rural market, Mr. Kurian said, "Currently, about 40 per cent of our sales come from rural areas and we want to increase this further in the coming days."

At present, the company sells its vehicle through a strong network of 400 dealers in the Indian market, to which it plans to further expand in the coming months. The company already has a significant presence in the rural market with low cost affordable bikes like Yamaha Crux and YBR 110, both of which are receiving a good response from the cost conscious rural buyers.
