If recent media reports are to be believed, Mercedes Benz is likely to launch the new economical E-220 sedan in the Indian market. The new low cost Mercedes Benz E220 CDI is expected to be launched in the country next month, in the festival season.
The new Mercedes Benz E220, which is expected to be rolled-out in the elegance trim, will be positioned below the starting range model of Mercedes Benz, below the existing E250 sedan. The new E220 is claimed to be about Rs 2.2 lakh cheaper as compared to the existing cheapest model E250 CDI, which is available at a price of Rs 42.2 lakh ex-showroom.
Powered by a 2.5L inline four cylinder engine, the E250 is capable of delivering a peak power of 149.4 (203 hp) KW at 4200 rpm and a peak torque of 500 Nm @1600 - 1800 rpm. Though the peak power will remain same in the new Mercedes Benz E220, the peak torque is expected to dip to 400 Nm @ 1400 rpm.
At present, the closest rival of the Mercedes Benz E Class is the BMW’s 5 series sedan which is available in almost similar price range. Both the companies are in a neck to neck battle in the Indian market, where BMW has been on the top position for the last two years. Now with the launch of a number of new products in the Indian auto market, Mercedes is looking forward to its leadership in the Indian market.
