      Volkswagen Group's sales increase 109.3 per cent in India in 2011

      2011 was a fruitful year for Volkswagen Group in India as its sales volumes grew by 109.3 per cent and it manufactured its 50000th and 100000th car at its Chakan unit. Individually, the three units operating in India, namely Audi, Volkswagen and Skoda, enjoyed sales increase of 83.5 per cent, 151 per cent and 49 per cent, respectively.

      Presently, the company's portfolio for India consists of a total of 21 models, including 10 that were launched in 2011. The automotive giant has also increased its presence in India by expanding its dealership network, with a total of 219 dealers in 2011, up by 56 dealers as compared to 2010.

      The German auto major also bolstered its manufacturing capacity in the country in 2011. The Chakan plant, near Pune, Maharashtra, now accounts for the production of 73 per cent of VW models, an increase of 13 per cent against 2010. The facility produced a total of 1,05,535 cars in the year 2011, representing an increase of 180 per cent over 2010.

      A total of 1,11,623 units were sold by Audi, Skoda and VW in 2011 as compared to 53,341 vehicles the three rolled out in 2010. Individually, VW, Skoda and Audi sold 76,107, 30,005 and 5,511 cars, respectively. The market share of Volkswagen Group in India stood at 4.9 per cent in 2011 against 2.5 per cent in 2010. Polo turned out to be the most popular car for the company in the domestic market, with sales of 37,153 vehicles.
