Safety is of foremost importance in a vehicle. This is a reason, when a new vehicle is built, hundreds of crash tests are performed on it so that the impact of any cause of the accident can be registered and the effect minimised. Toyota has been one of those companies that have always prioritised the safety of the people riding their vehicle. This is why the car manufacturing company started devising Total Human Model for Safety (THUMS) back in 1997 and recently, in this year, version 5 was launched.

Evidently, this Total Human Model for Safety became a crucial part of crash testing of a vehicle and started being called a crash test model. So far, the Toyota Central R&D had launched 4 versions that rolled out. Version 1 in 2002 was the basic structure, and was followed by Version 2 in 2004. This version had a face, and bones were also added. It was followed by a version 4 in 2006 which had a precise brain model, and soon, another advanced edition of version 4 was launched with internal organs modelled in a detailed manner.

The recently launched Version 5 of the THUMS, which has so far been adopted by many automotive industries, is the advanced version of a detailed muscle model. This would help in recording the data as to how he braces himself when crashed.

The crash dummy or the THUMS is fitted in a vehicle’s driver seat or at the shotgun position and the condition of an accident is repeated. The effect of the accident on the dummy in noted down with the help of various sensors that are attached to it. This data is used to design a model that provides maximum safety to the people riding the vehicle.

The version 5 of THUMS will help in recording the real-life reflex that a person would stimulate if caught in a condition of the accident. This advanced and intelligent version of THUMS can provide accurate information and thus help in designing of airbags, seatbelts, the positions at which they should be installed, etc. in an accurate manner.
