Toyota Motor Europe was recently honoured by the prestigious 2011 Green Manufacturing Award, presented by the World Trade Group at the fifth annual Strategic Manufacturing Awards in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Toyota Europe bagged the coveted title, owing to the fact that the company has decreased the energy utilisation by 40% in each of its vehicle in Europe. Moreover, the company has also reduced waste production by 38%, emission of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) by 51% and water usage during 2001-2009 by 44%. Even today, Toyota successfully engages in developing more energy and waste reduction methods during manufacturing.

Toyota's vehicle plants at Burnaston U.K are considered among the company's most environment-friendly plants. Burnaston Toyota car plant uses cleaner and efficient methods for production. Moreover, the plant promotes the use of alternative sources of energy, such as the use of a vast solar panel array that has the capacity of capturing up to 4.6 million kWh of energy per year. The amount of energy is enough to manufacture around 7,000 cars.

Accepting the award, Toyota’s General Manager, Plant Engineering and Safety, Steve Hope said, “This award recognizes the tremendous efforts by the members at all of our European Manufacturing facilities who continuously improve, and apply their knowledge of and expertise in the Toyota Production System to their daily activities.”

The judges carefully adjudged the award in favour of Toyota after studying several short-listed companies. The winner was chosen after analysing all short-listed companies on the basis of energy efficiency, water consumption and treatment, conformity with environmental regulations and reduction of waste during the production process.

Therefore, Toyota has been quite compliant towards the needs and demands of the environment which would help the car maker to earn laurels in future.
