As the Indian auto market gets exposed to interminable deterrents and detrimental trends, the only area that has escaped unhurt is the small car segment, which proves to be the sole breadwinner at present. The segment has constantly shown significant improvement; thus standing out in a market where the wheels within wheels situation has hindered the growth path.

Another piece of news that tends to give an effective push to the position of the compact car segment is here. According to reliable sources, it has been confirmed that Renault SA and its alliance partner Nissan Motor Co are mulling upon undertaking a project to build a new small car in India. The move can be seen as a tool to boost sales in the fast-growing emerging markets, a Renault spokesperson said Wednesday.

The project, however, does not aim to bring out an ultra low-cost vehicle that would be sold at as low price as €2,500.

Renault has roped in Gerard Detourbet, who presently heads Renault's entry-level division, to supervise the new Indian project that will involve the sharing of platform between the car makers.

The idea is to produce and sell the car in India and despatch it to other markets that have a penchant for such vehicles, the spokesperson said.

She added that the Renault-Nissan project has no link with another project studied by Renault and the Indian 2-wheeler and 3-wheeler giant Bajaj Motors. Thus, small cars seem to bring about much relief to the depressing Indian market and are expected to proliferate in the coming time.
