In a shocking incident that unfolded recently, the Italian rider Marco Simoncelli lost his life, after meeting with a horrific crash during the Malaysian MotoGP.

Simoncelli was entrapped in the breathtaking collision that also involved two other riders. The deadly incident took place during the second lap of the race, and subsequently the Italian racer, aged 24, died of his injuries.

The Italian rider's bike went berserk, coming out of a right-hand bend at the Sepang circuit, apparently losing his balance as he drifted back across into the centre of track. As a result, Simoncelli intercepted the path of Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi and they both smashed into Simoncelli, whose helmet came off during the impact.

As soon as the untoward incident took place, the race was immediately halted, and subsequently cancelled as the medical staff rushed the rider to the circuit's treatment centre for emergency attention, but in vain.

"Simoncelli was transported by ambulance to the circuit medical centre where the medical staff worked to resuscitate him," a MotoGP statement said." Notwithstanding their efforts, Marco succumbed to his injuries at 4:56 pm local time. "Everybody involved in MotoGP extends its deepest condolences to Marco's family, friends and team at this tragic loss," the statement further added.

Simoncelli was racing in his second season of MotoGP for the Honda team, after finishing in the eighth position in the overall rankings, during his debut campaign in 2010.

He was fast to carve a niche for himself by emerging as a fan favourite, owing to his daring riding style. He also dominated the first spot in Czech Republic in August, before attaining the best finish of his career with the second position during the recent Australian MotoGP.

Simoncelli's death is first such grave incident in MotoGP since Daijiro Katoh`s death that was caused due to the injuries he sustained in the Japanese MotoGP in 2003.
