      Sales of motorcycles crossed those of cars in December 2012

      The passenger vehicle sales figures in December 2012 have been announced by the apex automobile industry body- Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). Interestingly, the figures of motorcycles went past those of passenger cars during the month.

      In December 2012, the total sales in domestic passenger car market stood at 1,41,083 units, marking a drop of 12.51 per cent, under the review of 1,61,247 units recorded in the same month of 2011. Further, as per the detailed data revealed by SIAM on January 9, 2013, bike sales surged by 4.83 per cent during December 2012 in the country. The motorcycle market witnessed sales of 8,44,113 units last December, as compared to sales of 8,05,198 units in the same month of 2011.

      According to reports, combined sales in the Indian two-wheeler market, comprising those of motorcycles and scooters recorded a 4.45 per cent jump during December 2012. The total two-wheeler sales in the country were reported at 11,37,148 units during the month, a decent increase as compared to sales of 10,88,746 units recorded in the same month of 2011. Further, SIAM informed that sales in commercial vehicle sector of Indian auto market dropped by 13 per cent during December 2012 at just 62,786 units, whereas 72,166 units were sold in the corresponding month of 2011.

      Reportedly, the consolidated sales of vehicles across all categories posted a net rise of 2.77 per cent in the country, with the numbers standing at 14,51,517 units during December 2012. As per SIAM, the unified vehicle sales figures stood at 14,12,372 units during the same month of 2011 in the Indian market.

      The apex industry body has estimated a 0-1 per cent growth in vehicle sales in the Indian auto sector during the ongoing 2012-13 financial year. Further, the domestic market witnessed an overall increase of 4.57 per cent in vehicle sales between April and December months of 2012, as against those witnessed in the same period of 2011.
