Mercedes-Benz will launch the diesel version of the C-Class saloon in the Indian car market on February 11, 2015. The company has already launched the petrol version of the sedan in the country. Like the C200 petrol, the 220 CDI diesel C-Class will come to India via a CBU (Completely Built Unit) route. However, the local assembling of the sedan is expected to commence by year end.
The Mercedes C-Class 220 CDI is powered by a 2.1-litre, four-cylinder diesel unit that also powers the previous model. This engine develops 170bhp of power; however, the engine is expected to be tuned to offer more power. The C220 CDI diesel is likely to be launched in a fully-equipped top-spec version only. The vehicle will be equipped with several high-end features such as 8.4-inch touchscreen display with COMAND infotainment system, satellite navigation, push-button start, 13-speaker Burmester audio system, three-zone automatic climate control, rear view camera, panoramic sunroof, LED ambient lighting with three selectable colours, etc.
The Mercedes C-Class diesel is expected to be priced around Rs. 1 lakh - 2 lakh more than the C200 petrol variant. It will rival against the likes of Audi A4 sedan, BMW 3-Series and the upcoming Jaguar XE saloon. In order to compete well against its competitors, Mercedes needs to introduce the locally assembled C-Class in the country.
