The 2016 BMW X1 crossover that was revealed on June 3, 2015, has been spied in the metal - Chestnut Bronze Metallic body paint - for the first time. Based on the UKL FWD platform, the new-generation X1 received significant cosmetic updates and a revised engine lineup.

For the Indian market, the new-gen X1 will be available with the same 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder sDrive20d diesel engine that does duty to the existing model. This engine will be tuned for three states of power – 150bhp/ 330Nm (for X1 sDrive18d), 190bhp/ 400Nm (for X1 sDrive20d) and 231bhp/ 450Nm (for X1 sDrive25d). Transmissions on offer will be a 6-speed manual and an 8-speed automatic. The top-end model xDreive25d gets the xDrive AWD drive system as standard feature. Globally, the crossover will be offered with a revised engine lineup.

The new X1 uses high-strength steel, aluminum bonnet and aluminum swivel bearings that make it 135kgs lighter than the existing model. The width and height of the crossover have been increased by 21mm and 53mm, while the length has been reduced by 36mm. Now, it measures 4,439mm in length, 1,821mm in width and 1,598mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,670mm. The interior material quality, too, is better than before. It gets a new wood-adorned dashboard with a freestanding LCD Control Display, Head-Up Display, BMW’s latest iDrive infotainment system and instrument cluster with a display.

The 2016 BMW X1 will be showcased at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Expected to launch in the first half of 2016 in India, the X1 crossover will be brought as CKD unit, and then assembled at BMW’s Chennai-based facility.
