BMW X1 Review

Summary

The new-generation BMW X1 is based on an all-new platform, and after the initial success of the X1 this could help the Bavarian automaker to succeed this time as well. The new X1 follows the new design language and this time it has an all-new chassis as well. BMW is offering the X1 with a range of new features and powertrain upgrades. The new BMW X1 is lighter and a lot more fuel-efficient too. The performance of this compact SUV is even better than the existing X1.

Further to this, read BMW X1 Road Test details by our expert.

Exterior

The new X1 is based on the UKL1 front-wheel drive platform and it is 4439mm in length, 1821mm in width, 1598mm in height. The wheelbase has also been increased by 90mm. The new UKL1 platform is shared with the Mini family. The new X1 offers rugged proportions, and powerful sculptures that showcase the design to be a SAV (sports activity vehicle). The three-eyed face of the X1 that has been formed by the twin-circular LED headlights and fog lamps make for a hallmark X model. The X1’s design is more of an evolution from its predecessor. One can look at the new-generation and clearly relate to the previous generation.

Interiors

The interiors of the X1 are all-new, and it has new BMW steering wheel with controls for telephone, bluetooth and even the twin dial instrument cluster. There are paddle shifts on the steering wheel and then a new pop-up screen as well. The centre console has climate control and iDrive as well. The BMW X1 has a new gear knob and then the dual tone interiors look sporty. The BMW X1 has been designed as a four-seater compact SUV and its boot also is large enough. There is more rear knee room as the wheelbase has been increased.

The front seats can be electrically adjusted. The new X1 has grown in terms of space and height and this is another strong point for the compact SUV. The luggage compartment now has a space of 505 litres. The rear seat can be completely folded and then the boot capacity is a massive 1550 litres.

Engine & Transmission

The BMW X1 has a 2.0-litre diesel engine that churns about189bhp of power and it comes with an eight-speed transmission. This is the first X1 that is a front-wheel drive. The performance of the X1 has never been an issue and with the new X1, it will be even better. The BMW X1 is offered with xDrive (all-wheel drive) option as well. The new X1 will be initially made available only with a diesel engine, it is in the second half of 2016 that the new X1 will get the petrol engine.

Performance and Handling

The handling of BMWs is one of the best and with the new X1, it will be even better. The new lighter platform means that the engines will have a better performance and better handling too. The all-wheel drive will ensure that you do not lose out on grip and this makes the X1 a good handling SAV. BMW is offering it with front wheel and all-wheel drive options. The new X1 has speed sensitive steering wheel that weighs up as you increase your speed. This makes the X1 a great product to consider for the Indian car market.

Mileage

The 1995 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 18 kmpl in city and 20 kmpl on highways.

Safety Features

The BMW X1 comes with multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP and other safety features that one expects in a luxury vehicle. The BMW X1 offers all the features that one will need for the price paid.

Verdict

The new X1 is a much better product than before. One of the major constrains in the X1 was the space and this has been taken care in the new-generation X1. In driving, BMWs are certainly better than the other German competitors.

Competition

The new BMW X1 is a direct competitor to the Audi Q3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA. These are all front-wheel drive SUVs with all-wheel drive options (except the GLA). Now, even the BMW X1 has joined the same league.

Pros

  1. Freshness
  2. Power
  3. Drive
  4. Mileage
  5. Handling
