Maruti Suzuki records 40.8% skid in August sales

After resuming the production at its Manesar plant after a stoppage resulted from the violent breakout in the month of July, the sales figures of the country’s pioneer in passenger segment vehicles, Maruti Suzuki India Limited is facing a substantial downfall in sales by 40.8 percent in August. While the sales in August last year stood at 91,442 units, the sales in the same month this year totalled at a meagre 54,154 units.

The domestic sales in the concerned month tallied at 50,129 units plunging down by 35 percent in comparison to the sale of 77,086 units recorded in August 2011. The exports skid by a major 72 percent from 14,356 units in August 2011 to 4,025 units in August 2012.

The highest selling entry level sedan, Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire witnessed a decline of 60.7 percent in sales to 3,085 units this August. Amongst the compact cars, the highly popular Swift hatchback along with city cars Estilo and Ritz resulted in a dip in sales by 62.2 percent with sales standing at 6,059 units during the same month.

The sales figures of the other small cars such as the M800, Alto, A-Star and Wagon R also depicted a fall by 41.2 percent with the sale of 22,062 units.

During the period under review, the sales registered by Maruti Suzuki SX4 sedan measured at 447 units declining by 76.4 percent with zero sales recorded by the high end sedan, Kizashi.

The over a month long production stoppage has cost the company a high loss in production of its hot selling models leading to shortages as well as stretching in the waiting period for the buyers, further resulting to lower customer turnout in the Indian auto market.
