Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL), the country's largest passenger car exporter and second largest car maker, was felicitated with the esteemed 'Green Award 2011-12' by the government of Tamil Nadu, for its sustainable and environment friendly manufacturing operations in the country. HMIL procured the prestigious honour in the large industries category, as a number of its ongoing projects in India have been proclaimed as rational and healthy towards the environment.

The felicitation ceremony was presided by Selvi J. Jayalalithaa, Chief Minister, Tamil Nadu and was held at State Secretariat on September 11, 2012. The Chief Minister presented the coveted award to R. Sethuraman, Director, Finance and Corporate Affairs, HMIL.

HMIL's well planned manufacturing processes minimise the usage of water supply provided by the government, besides curbing the pollution level in the country. Remarkably, the company has developed a world class Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant at its facility, which harvests and recycles used up water and assists the factory in minimising dependence on the government water supplies. Further, the water storage tanks in the RO plant have an installed capacity of 2.75 kilo litres of water, which make the facility self sufficient in water requirement.

Reportedly, the eco-friendly facility has been further laced with solar powered sources, LED lights and automatic switches in most instruments and panels. Among the many technological innovations, HMIL has installed several energy conservation systems like solar water heater for usage in canteens, Solar powered office lights, LED street lighting, automated turn-off for many appliances like air conditioners, which reduce energy consumption by 3-4 percent per year.

The 'Green Award' is awarded to those companies, which give top-most priority to the environment impact and energy conservation, besides work intensively in minimising exploitation of natural resources. The recycling efforts are also taken in consideration along with the overall impact on the nature. The esteemed honour is an initiative by the Tamil Nadu government to encourage Indian companies to work in an environment friendly manner and indulge in sustainable development.

Expressing his delight at the felicitation ceremony, R. Sethuraman said, “It is indeed an honour to be recognized by the Government of Tamil Nadu for our efforts in environmental sustenance. HMIL has taken its responsibilities very seriously and encourages all stakeholders associated with it to practice environmentally sustainable practices; our initiatives have saved the company over rupees two crore in water bills.”

HMIL has set a perfect example for the Indian corporate and more and more Indian companies are expected to follow the suit of embarking on environment friendly initiatives in the country. It will be nice to see a new name winning the 'Green Award' next year.
