German car maker Audi is playing host to a student competition named Autonomous Driving Cup 2015, which will see them fight it out to create piloted driving model car. The students will be required to work on a piloted software program while Audi will provide them with a 1:8 scale Q5 model. The winner of this competition is going to win a sum of INR 6.65 lakh while the second and third place runners up will get INR 3.3 lakh and INR 66000, respectively.

These cars, all-wheel drive models, will be accelerated to a maximum speed of 40 kmph with the assistance of an electric motor. According to sources, all participants are going to be provided with a software package, which will be basic in nature. The participants, following that, develop their own framework of the software that processes data for interpretation and controlling the car. Speed is paramount in this competition as whichever team finishes the set faster with minimum errors.

This event will be held at the Audi Museum Mobile on March 25th and 26th, and will see ten teams going head to head. Bjorn Giesler, who is among the organisers, said, “Our competition course will serve as the proving ground for the young experts’ software. Oncoming and intersecting traffic, tricky parking situations and obstacles that suddenly appear will put their programming precision to the test”

As per the organisers, the software development strategy is similar to the ones used in Audi’s test driver assistance setups. Giesler believes that a few of these tasks are going to be really similar to production development of cars. “The measurement sensors in the models have to work just as precisely as those in their big brothers. We are excited to see the innovative solutions the students come up with,” he said.
