Compass Expert Review
Opening
This is the Jeep Compass Trailhawk, the more capable off-road spec version, that is. It comes with a BS-VI compliant diesel motor, an automatic transmission, mechanical and cosmetic upgrades, and then some more. But, do these changes make it a potent off-roader in the premium mid-size SUV segment? We find out.
Firstly, let me give you a brief overview of the SUV that has turned the fortunes of Jeep in India. With over 36,000 units sold since its launch in India, the Compass is to Jeep, what water is to a fish. The SUV created a frenzy when its prices were announced back in 2017, and over the span of time, the Compass has established itself as a premium offering in its segment.
Appearance Exterior
Now, the Jeep Compass was always a handsome-looking car, and the Trailhawk takes its a few notches further. While the overall design is similar to the standard model, it receives a few cosmetic and functional changes. These include an anti-glare black decal on the hood, and the party trick is the 'Trail Rated' monikers on the front fenders. It also gets matte gunmetal finish on the front grille, fog lamps bezel, ORVMs, roof, pillars and the window line. For all their claims to ruggedness, the signature twin red tow hooks at the front are conspicuous by their absence in the Indian edition. However, it has been done to comply with the new pedestrian safety norms. The SUV, though, gets a rear tow hook, which can haul 1.5X of the gross vehicle weight.
The Compass Trailhawk comes with redesigned front and rear bumpers, and an increased ground clearance, which now stands at 205mm. The SUV gets improved approach, break-over and departure angles. This, complete with higher ground clearance, helps the SUV in tackling harsher terrains with assurance. Then, there are the new 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, while Jeep India also has thrown-in all-terrain Falken Wildpeak HT tyres in the mix. The Compass Trailhawk features a higher-set air intake, which enables the SUV to drive a water-fording capacity of 483mm. The off-road credentials are further improved by the underbody skid plates and all-weather floor mats.
Appearance Interior
Unlike the exteriors, the interiors of Jeep Compass Trailhawk feature a handful of changes. Differentiating the Trailhawk from the standard model are the all-black interiors with red accents around the instrument cluster, gear lever and the speakers. The SUV comes with contrast red stitching on the steering wheel, seats and door pads, and it also gets the 'Trailhawk' badge on the front seats. The seats, itself, are well-bolstered and offer excellent lateral support. There's nothing to fault about the quality of materials to in the cabin. That said, although the Compass Trailhawk will be the range-topping model, it misses out on equipment that is standard on the Limited Plus trim. The Trailhawk doesn't get powered driver's seat and automatic headlights and wipers. Heck, even the panoramic sunroof is available as an option on the Compass Trailhawk.
Still, the Trailhawk is handsomely equipped with model-first features. This includes engine start/stop function, a new 7-inch multi-information display, and hill descent control, all of which are not available on the standard version. Safety equipment that completes the package includes six airbags, traction control, ESC, hill-start assist, and an electronic parking brake. The package also includes features like an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, advanced cruise control with speed limiter, bi-xenon headlights, and keyless entry/go.
Performance Drive
The Jeep Compass Trailhawk is offered with a BS-VI compliant 2.0-litre Multijet Turbo II diesel motor that pairs with a ZF-sourced 9-speed automatic transmission and Jeep's Active Drive 4x4 system. Jeep has worked on the internals of the engine, and the motor has been tuned to improve the initial clatter. That said, engine becomes quite vocal once it goes past 3,000rpm. But then there would be only few instances like overtaking when the engine will have to be worked a little. Otherwise, the power delivery is linear and with a strong mid-range it can chug along comfortably.
Now for the automatic transmission, the carmaker is using a nine-speed ZF gearbox that offers closely-stacked ratios and upshifts early in a bid to improve fuel efficiency. This gearbox doesn’t get a dedicated Sport mode, but there’s an option of manual gear shifting (without paddle-shifters). This isn’t as snappy as you would want. That said, the gearbox is slightly slow to react to throttle inputs with some delay in shifts. This results in some back and forth movement of your body while upshifting. Now let us give you a lowdown on the off-road manners of the SUV.
In Jeep's confines, the Trailhawk badge isn't given but is earned. And when Jeep says its SUV is 'Trail Rated', they mean serious off-road cred. All 'Trail Rated' Jeep SUVs are tested on five parameters – traction, ground clearance, articulation (ramp travel index 321), manoeuvrability and water fording ability. And for us to test the off-road prowess of the Compass Trailhawk, Jeep had designed an off-road course, where we had to take the vehicle through deeply dug ditches, a patch of boulders, small ponds, climbing hillocks, descending down mountains, and everything in-between.
The Active Drive 4X4 system on the Compass Trailhawk comes with Jeep’s Active Drive Low function and a locking rear differential, which provides a final drive ratio of 4.334 and a crawl ratio of 20:1. The Selec-Terrain drive system also gets a dedicated Rock mode, in addition to the Sand, Snow, Mud and Auto modes. The abundance of torque that the ‘4WD Low’ mode offered around this circuit helped us in tackling the various obstacles.
First came the axle-bender section, where we got to test the articulation of the vehicle. Then there was a patch full of rocks, followed by technical bends, and steep inclines and drops. Things became easier with the improved approach (26.5 degrees), break-over (21.2 degrees), and departure angles (31.6 degrees), and the underbody protection also meant that we didn’t have to worry much about any impending damage to the belly along the course.
Further, the hill descent control came into play and took the vehicle downhill at crawling speeds. All we had to do was to steer in the right direction. Humming cheerfully, the drive-train made short work of the tricky hurdles and the light steering also helped us a great deal in such conditions. What’s more, the Trailhawk also gets a disconnecting rear axle feature and a power take-off unit (PTU) that again are useful when the situation isn’t as demanding.
Jeep has tuned the steering according to the Indian driving conditions. It is light for city driving/off-road conditions and weighs up nicely at highway speeds. The steering is direct and points the car in the right direction with slightest of inputs. It offers good feel and isn’t reluctant to come back to the centre. The steering isn’t overly assisted either.
Also, the Trailhawk features an all-independent suspension setup, with high tech FSD (frequency sensitive damping) dampers from Koni. The suspension damping is commendable and these help the SUV in providing a plush ride quality. While the low-speed ride is slightly on the stiffer side, the high-speed ride is composed. The automaker has reworked the suspension setup to counter the added weight and the increased height. A hydraulic rebound stopper (HRS) has been used to contain the clunking noise if the SUV goes over sharp potholes and speed breakers. Even for the cabin insulation, there’s hardly any wind/road-noise that filters into the cabin. The all-terrain tyres offer good grip levels throughout, but they do screech even during normal cornering. The brakes offer good progression and feel. However, we would’ve loved a stronger bite for reassurance.

Conclusion
The answer we set-out to seek at the start of the review was, is the Compass Trailhawk a capable premium off-road SUV? The simple answer to this is a thumping yes. The Jeep Compass Trailhawk shines on off-road trails, drives well, is packed with features, and offers the convenience of an automatic transmission. Sure, it could have done better with a sporty gearbox and a suppler low-speed ride. However, these shortcomings aren't significant enough to not consider the SUV. Now, only if the company prices it sensibly at around Rs 26 lakhs (ex-showroom), Jeep India will have a winner at hands.

Engine and Performance
Engine and Performance
Powering the facelifted Jeep Compass is a 163bhp/240Nm 1.4-litre Multiair petrol engine with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed DCT gearbox, and the one we’re driving for this review, a 2.0-litre 170bhp/350Nm Multijet diesel that’s mated to a nine-speed automatic with the brand’s Active Drive 4x4 system. You can also get this engine with a six-speed manual transmission.
As you crank the diesel mill, one will instantly be audience to a noticeable clatter within its cabin, despite being sincerely well-insulated one. In fact, there’s no running away from it, and the clatter is not just fairly audible on the go, but there’s a significant share of vibrations felt on the steering too. Then there’s the power delivery; it’s linear and although sufficient for most city driving situations, the nine-speed auto box is relatively slow to respond.
Topping this is the perceptible lag when you mash the throttle to perform a more aggressive move or to overtake. This pause, whilst the downshift happens and the power flows in post that, fiddles considerably with the driving experience. It ultimately requires one to plan their moves in advance. Nonetheless, at highway speeds, the gearbox responds quicker, whereby cruising is accomplished without having the engine sweat a wee bit; making it an ideal cross country mile muncher.
Ride Quality and Handling
Ride Quality and Handling
Nothing new here. So, the Compass’ ride remains slightly firm at slower speeds, but in no way makes the occupants uncomfortable. The faster you go, the better is the absorption of road imperfections by the sorted chassis setup and dampers, barring only the ultra-harsh bumps. These lend it mature road manners overall. The only thing to watch out for is the low front bumper that can scrape tall obstacles.
Meanwhile, handling, on the whole, is largely predictable with some body roll at hand. The steering itself is direct and fairly responsive (2.5 turns locks-to-lock). But on the downside, it does feel increasingly heavy. Although this heft comes in handy when you drive fast on winding roads, it can translate into extra effort while driving in tight confines. Nothing that can put you off though.
Comfort, Convenience, and features
Comfort, Convenience, and features
It’s the cabin of the refreshed Compass that sees the most action; almost new, so to say. As a result, it feels more luxurious and lavish. An all-black colour theme replaces the earlier beige/black dual-tone cabin, which now uses a fresh dashboard with a new steering, a revamped massive touchscreen, and an all-digital intuitive instrumentation cluster that’s got cool graphics, but also gives away an Audi fragrance. Also adding that opulent edge is loads of chrome and contrasting gloss black slabs that are splashed all over the dashboard, steering wheel, and gear lever.
Space remains the same as the earlier model, so there’s good legroom and the large seat proportions make for comfortable seating in the front. Plus, the backbenchers also profit from a commanding view as a consequence of being positioned higher than the front ones. The only downside is that there’s only enough shoulder room for two to be seated in utmost comfort. But that aside, the rear occupants get their fair portion of AC vents, a USB charging socket, and 1.0-litre bottle holders.
When it comes to the 438-litre boot, it’s by far the segment standard, easily capable of swallowing not just two/three medium suitcases, but also a few duffle bags. Likewise, since the bench has 60:40 split-folding functionality, the boot enclosure can swell accordingly for more practicality. Meanwhile, the Compass’ significantly upgraded feature list now includes an all-digital instrumentation, dual-zone climate control, a double panel sunroof, electric driver’s seat with memory, a 360-degree camera with park assist, ventilated seats, and wireless charging.
The highlight, however, has to be the 10.1-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system that runs Jeep’s latest UConnect system. Its crisp graphics also aid the 360-degree camera functionality. Plus, there’s immaculate hands-free functionality through the voice command feature along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You also get loads of connected car technology that includes software updates and a Jeep App.
Safety features
Safety features
As for safety, all variants get two front airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, ISOFIX child seat mounting points, and hill start assist. This ‘Model S’ variant also gets additional goodies such as side airbags, side curtain airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system, and hill-hold and hill descent control for the 4x4 models.
Exterior
Exterior
At the first glance, it’s difficult to spot any changes, but on increased scrutiny, one will notice that the shiny chrome bits have been replaced by sporty black and grey trim. Inadvertently, this makes the fascia look significantly slimmer. Other than that, the side and rear portions look more or less the same, despite the addition of the gorgeous new 18-inch alloy wheels. Plus, the grey pillars and roof are a part of the dual-tone scheme for this Sport version. As such, the 2021 Compass continues with its mature and premium stance.
Conclusion
Conclusion
The previous Jeep Compass model excelled in everything but in the cabin department. This is why the mechanicals of the new Compass have been left untouched, while the rest of the car (read interior) went through a serious makeover. And, it is seriously appealing now. But it is at the cost of some rear-seat space when compared to its rivals. Likewise, since the Jeep Compass’ price ranges from Rs 20.20 lakh to Rs 34.59 lakh (OTR, Mumbai- for our tested ‘Model S’ 4x4 diesel AT), it is the most expensive in its segment, and also takes the fight to cars such as the MG Hector Plus and the Tata Safari. But what works for the Jeep Compass is that it is a capable SUV that also commands its place due to the exemplary heritage.

Engine and Performance
The engine option on the 2022 Jeep Compass Trailhawk is the familiar 2.0-litre diesel unit from the Compass. It churns out 168bhp of maximum power and 350Nm of peak torque. Like the standard automatic variants, this mill also comes mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox, but here four-wheel drive is standard. It also boasts Jeep’s SelecTerrain system for better off-road drivability. So, there's no change to the Multijet diesel engine. But the additional off-road equipment has added a bit to its overall weight and even the fuel efficiency is a bit down to 14.9kmpl. The same 4x4 variant in the Limited optional or the Model S optional trim delivers 15.3kmpl. On the other hand, the 4x2 variant has an ARAI- claimed fuel efficiency of 17.3kmpl. Also, the bad news for off-road enthusiasts and fanatics is that this 4x4 trim cannot be had with a manual transmission. There's only this automatic variant.
However, the good thing is the convenience this gearbox provides, complementing the engine well. Sure, you will miss the punchy feel from the manual version, but this one feels more relaxing. With loads of torque available at the bottom-end, the Trailhawk starts pulling right from 1,800rpm without a fuss. Then, it further starts making progress quickly after 2,000rpm, thanks to its strong mid-range. That means you'll be doing triple-digit speeds in no time. Now, that's a compliment for an off-roader as it's not a slow boring drive till the spot where you might actually plan to go off the road.
I'm sure most of the other times you'd want to comfortably cruise on highways or for that matter peacefully commute. For an urban dwelling too, this gearbox does the job well, with its nine closely stacked gear ratios. No, it doesn’t feel seamless, but still provides an adequate response to throttle inputs. And if required, you can shift manually too, but only through the cog as it misses paddle shifters. Still, you'd be mostly in a higher gear with reduced engine speeds, ensuring less engine noise and even reducing fuel consumption.
Ride and Handling
Given its 'Trail' rated specifications, this one is lifted by one inch compared to the regular Compass to provide higher articulation. So, it does ride a little higher. This lifted suspension helps in offering water wading capabilities of up to 19-inch depth. On your usual commute, it will clear the tallest of speed breakers without you having to worry a bit. And yes, if the terrain gets even worse, there’s an additional 'Rock' mode, over the Auto, Snow, and Sand/Mud modes in regular Compass 4x4. Then, there are more aids in the form of hill-start assist, hill descent control, Jeep Active Drive Low that offers a low range and 4WD lock — all that are important for hardcore off-roading. All in all, the suspension setup provides a supple ride without unpleasant clunking or any noise. It's nicely tuned to provide an optimal balance between on-road as well as off-road ride comfort and handling.
Now, with three turns lock-to-lock it has the same 5.7m turning radius as the Compass. So, it’s as easy to manoeuver with a light steering that weighs up adequately as you dial up the speed. Expect some body roll in corners and even side-to-side movement at slow speeds on bad roads. Also, a departure from the standard variants that get Bridgestone tyres, the Trailhawk sports Falken Wildpeaks, which, in 225/60 R17 section are all-season all-terrain tyres. The carmaker claims higher traction capabilities on all types of terrains as with its predecessor. And, we did feel confident as it gripped well even under hard braking. However, the brakes could have had a better bite, especially with a mushy feel at the pedal. But thankfully it's progressive and with a well-tuned ABS, adds to all that assurance.
Exterior
This is the latest iteration of the Trailhawk based on the Compass facelift, which was launched in India at the beginning of last year. It focuses on off-road upgrades, meaning it comes equipped with hardware that enables it to tackle even more difficult terrain. Of course, this is apart from its stylish appearance. So yes, in terms of cosmetic changes it does get a bit of a nip and tuck. To summarise, there's a tweaked grille, revised headlamps, a decal on the hood, new alloy wheels, a red-coloured towing hook, and yes, finally, the 'Trail-rated' badges. Also, to provide better approach and departure angles, it has these re-mastered bumpers that are different from the regular Compass. So yes, not just cosmetic but purposeful changes too.
Comfort, Convenience, and Features
Inside, things seem familiar in terms of layout, design, quality of materials, and equipment which we appreciated with the facelifted version. The driver seat is now electrically powered, and you sit in a nice driving position with good outward visibility. In fact, even the passenger seat is power-adjustable. The interior follows an all-black theme with 'Trailhawk' embroidered on seats. There's even red stitching for a refreshed appeal. Other bits remain the same as the Compass, with an ergonomic cabin and comfortable seats. Now, I know you would prefer to be in the driver's seat. But then what about your friends in the back seat? Well, there's not really a very generous space to stretch out and the dark interior might make the place feel even more confined. But then your friends won’t complain as the seats are supportive with a slight incline for a comfortable posture. And then the huge sunroof adds to the delight. Now apart from the good amount of storage and stowage places, the SUV has a boot space of 438-litre. It is more than sufficient to accommodate various luggage your friends might bring in. What's more, a powered tailgate further adds to the convenience.
Now, on to some noteworthy features on this top-spec version. It gets a big 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system running on UConnect 5 operating system. Then, there’s the customisable digital instrument cluster that we liked. Furthermore, there's a wireless charger and front ventilated seats. Moreover, this trim doesn't miss out on features like the outgoing one and packs in all the safety suites that Jeep has to offer on its top-spec models.
Conclusion
The Trailhawk brings in the practicality of the Compass with added off-road capability. So, if you love to go off-roading with friends, this one should certainly be on top of your list. After all, it now has all the creature comforts, modern equipment, is frugal, and even easy to drive. It can be your daily driver while also doubling up as an exceptional off-roader for a road-biased SUV. That said, Jeep's limited dealer network might still be a deterrent along with a high price tag like the last version. Upon launch, it will go up against the diesel automatics like the Hyundai Tucson, Mahindra XUV700, and the Isuzu MU-X.

India is also the first right-hand market to receive the 2021 Compass and will serve as the production hub for all right-hand markets. The new Compass is available with two engine options, four trims across 11 variants, and seven exterior colour shades.
Interior
On the inside, the party piece is the floating 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with FCA’s latest Uconnect 5 now placed above the aircon vents. The driver is further allured with an all-digital 10.2-inch instrument commanded by a new three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel. Other additions to the cabin include wireless smartphone charging, front ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera setup, power tailgate, cruise control, and eight-way power-adjustable front seats with the driver side getting a memory function.
The Compass also scores high on safety and is equipped with over 60 plus active and passive safety features such as six airbags, rain brake support, hill hold and descent control, electronic roll mitigation, and brake lock differential amongst others. The connected car technology on the Compass packs in vehicle data, location-based services, stolen vehicle assist, geofencing, and driver analytics.
Exterior
The Compass has been around for three years now and this is the first major update that Jeep has given the mid-size SUV. It sports the signature seven-box front grille with chrome inserts and sleek LED headlamps with integrated LED DRLs. The bumper has also been reworked adding a black horizontal air intake in the middle flanked by LED fog lamps. The 18-inch alloys are new as well with a new five-spoke two-tone design.
Engine and Transmission
The engines under the bonnet remain the same with a 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine and a 2.0-litre turbo diesel motor. The former makes 160bhp/250Nm torque while the latter is good for 168bhp and 350Nm of peak torque. The six-speed manual gearbox is shared by both engines. A seven-speed DCT unit is also on offer for the petrol while the oil burner gets a nine-speed automatic transmission with a 4x4 drive configuration.
