Volvo, the world’s second largest bus manufacturer, is planning to introduce its hybrid- electric powered bus on the Indian roads. The Volvo 7700 hybrid, which was showcased at the Delhi Auto Expo 2012, is a 105 seater, low floor single bus with a powerful diesel engine and an electric motor that can be used either together or separately.

The bus is set to make a debut on the roads of Bangalore initially on trial basis for two months, conducted by Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). On the successful trial, increased investment will be made to introduce more buses in Bangalore. As per Mr. R. Ashoka, Karnataka Transport Minister, a preliminary report states that the engine’s powerful performance will result in lower diesel fuel costs by 30 percent along with a significant reduction in the emission levels by 40-50 percent.

The hybrid bus comprises of an intercooled, 5 Liter MD5 and four cylinder turbocharged diesel engine generating a maximum power of 210 Bhp and a maximum torque of 800 Nm. The diesel engine is coupled with an electric motor supported by lithium ion batteries that are charged through regenerative braking making use of the diesel engine’s alternator.

Moreover, the Volvo 7700 Hybrid is fuel economical as when the vehicle is at a standstill, the engine turns off till the initial 15-20 Kmph during which the vehicle is powered by the electric motor.
