What could be simply considered the biggest discount offer in the Indian auto market at present, the European auto giant Volkswagen is offering a jaw dropping discount of Rs 25 Lakh on its top line luxury creation Phaeton. The move has been taken in a bid to boost the sales of this Phaeton that has been registering sluggish sales figures since last few months.
At present, the Phaeton model carries a price tag of Rs 75 lakh and competing with the likes of BMW 7 series, Mercedes S class and Audi A8 in the global market. The sales figures of the car haven’t been as per the expectations and only 53 units of the car sold in India in the period of last 18 months. Phaeton was launched in the country in January 2010.
Globally launched in year 2002, the Volkswagen Phaeton factory has been operating only at one third of its total capacity of 20,000 units per annum, due to moderate sales.
The recent slowdown in sales has forced many car makers to offer freebies and discounts on their sluggishly performing car models. For instance, Honda is offering a discount of whopping Rs1.7 lakh on its premium hatchback Jazz. While the German luxury car maker Audi is offering a discount of Rs 3 lakh on the existing stock of A6 sedan.
