The German automotive company, Volkswagen recently previewed its new Cross Coupe Concept which is lined-up for the official unveiling at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. According to the company, the new concept is a compact hybrid crossover which promises to offer performance, style and efficiency.

The stunning design of the new Cross Coupe has been developed by designers, Walter de Silva and Klaus Bischoff. The new crossover carries very short overhangs, owing to the wheels which are pushed to the corners.

The outer length of the concept vehicle measures 171.1 inches, making it shorter than the current Volkswagen Tiguan, but much longer in comparison to the Golf model. Based on its dimensions, Volkswagen's Cross Coupe Concept will be positioned alongside the upcoming Ford Fiesta-based crossover and Chevrolet Sonic-based crossover.

Moreover, the new crossover concept from Volkswagen makes an aggressive stance with its long hood and slanted rear side. Towards the front, the headlights are connected by the radiator grille in a distinct manner. The chrome strips not only enhance the car's designing quotient, but also adds functionality with daytime running lights placed on the bottom strip and turn signals on the top strip.

The company has also boosted the interiors of its Cross Coupe Concept, as it is integrated with a programmable instrument cluster that connects to the driving mode selector. The gauges show information correlating to which, various drive modes like off-road, sport or city can be selected.

Volkswagen is confident that its new Cross Coupe Concept will instantly impress buyers with its powerful 148 bhp, turbocharged engine that generates a peak torque of 195 Nm. The engine is mated to an electric motor that delivers 54 bhp and 180 Nm of optimum power and torque respectively.

Moreover, the rear axle is mounted with another electric motor that is activated while driving only in electric mode or when all-wheel drive is required. The electric motor on the rear axle is capable of delivering 114 bhp of maximum power and 270 Nm of torque.

Thus, the overall design and engineering of the new Cross Coupe from Volkswagen aims to take the company into the next generation of crossovers.
