Before the official commencement of the highly-awaited Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan Motors executives revealed that the company's five door electric hatchback car, Nissan LEAF has achieved more than 20,000 sales worldwide.

Chief Executive Officer of Nissan Motors, Carlos Ghosn said, in a statement, in late July this year that the sales figures for its electric Nissan LEAF surpassed 10,100 units. Furthermore, Ghosn also mentioned that with this momentum the Japanese auto giant is expected to emerge as a global leader in developing zero emission vehicles.

During mid November, electric Nissan LEAF sales touched the 17,000 units figure. Now, towards the month end, the company has confirmed sales of more than 20,000 electric Nissan LEAF worldwide.

Out of the 20,000 Nissan LEAFs sold around the world, more than 9,000 units have made its way into the driveways and garages in the Unites States. Of the 9,000 electric Nissan LEAFs, more than 60% that is around 5,400 units have been sold to California residents.

Nissan LEAF was first unveiled by the Japanese car manufacturer back in August 2009 as the world's first electric car developed for affordability and real world requirements. It was during late 2010 when the zero-emission electric compact vehicle went on sale in American, Japanese and European markets.

The company emphasised on a number of key aspects of the electric hatchback which include, affordable pricing, distinguished styling, zero-emission power-train and platform and advanced intelligent transportation (IT) system.

It is important to note that the electric compact vehicle from Nissan Motors has experienced favourable markets, owing to its advanced environment friendly package that comes at an affordable price. Company executives also confirmed that the Nissan LEAF sales in the United States are on track and expected to cross at least 10,000 units before the year ends.

Thus, the unique combination of innovation and affordability in the electric Nissan LEAF has created a new trend especially in the American auto market.
