World’s largest auto maker, Toyota has come up with a new set of petrol engines. These engines as the company says are more frugal than its current line-up of engines. Toyota’s new petrol engines comprise of a 1.0 litre, three cylinder engine and a 1.3 litre, four cylinder motor. Barring the current trend of bestowing turbocharging and direct injection technology in engines as done by other auto makers to compensate reduced engine capacity of stripped down motors, Toyota has stuck to its hybrid set up. Toyota’s hybrid set up that delivers increased power and torque output courtesy electric motor has worked perfectly fine for the company and it believes that it will continue to perform well in future too.

By 2015, the company will be developing 15 newpowertrainsunder its new line-up of engines. These engines will be inducted in Toyota’s models across the globe, these engines will be mostly equipped in cars that are due for a partial redesign. Company also claims that these engines use the Atkinson cycle that is usually used in hybrid engines exquisitely. Atkinson cycle renders increased expansion ratio and enables to reduce the waste heat via a high compression ratio which further enhances thermal efficiency.

The company aims at enhancing the fuel efficiency of these engines by using intake port with new shape that enables robust tumble flow and a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system coupled withVVT-iEtechnology. TheVVT-iEtechnology results in better combustion and decreased losses. Use of start/stop technology in these engines can further up the efficiency by up to 15 %.
