With global sales of 1.22 million units in calendar year 2013, Toyota’s premium saloon, Corolla has emerged the most popular car across the globe. Toyota Motors Sales U.S.A, Inc released the data of the saloon’s sales in 2013, reporting a 5 % increase in YoY sales. According to the Toyota’s analyses of Polk new vehicle registration data from IHS automotive that fetches 96% of new vehicle sales across the globe, Corolla clearly emerges the best-selling vehicle in 2013 with 1,098, 524 million units. These figures include, Corolla sedan and other variants sold by the name of Corolla Axio, Corolla Altis and Corola EX 4-door sedans. Besides these, Corolla-badged Fielder and Rumion 5-door vehicles are also included. The saloon is available for sale in around 150 countries in the global markets including India. A tweaked version of Corolla Altis is in the works and is likely to be launched in the domestic market in the month of May.

“The Corolla stands as the international face of Toyota and touches millions of people across the globe every day,” said Bill Fay, Toyota division group vice president and general manager.  “Being the world’s best-selling car speaks volumes about the satisfaction and loyalty our customers feel about the Corolla and Toyota.”
Toyota Corolla tweaked version has not been launched in India yet but the saloon is available for sale in new avatar in other markets. The new Corolla sports various new design elements and promises to deliver improved fuel efficiency. Ever since its introduction in 1966, the saloon has recorded staggering sales of 40.7 million units till February 2014. Corolla is a popular model in US, the premium saloon posted an impressive sales of over 300,000 units in 2013 witnessing a 4% rise in YoY sales.

However on the contrary, Toyota India’s sales dropped sharply in March 2014 at 9,160 units. In the same time last year the company sold 21,143 units in India. Toyota will soon be launching new Corolla Altis in India, hopefully the refreshed version of the saloon will help company to improve sales. Toyota India also proclaimed recently that it will keep its focus on bigger cars and is in no mood to tap into sub-4 lakh segment. Therefore, we expect more premium cars from the Japanese auto maker to be launched in India.
