With the growing popularity of the compact SUVs, car manufacturers are aiming to launch their products across the globe. Now, the world’s largest carmaker Toyota is aiming to join the league. According to media reports, the company is working on a compact SUV which will be developed on Toyota’s new Global architecture (TNGA).

Like Volkswagen’s MQB platform, the TNGA is a versatile platform which will host a range of upcoming Toyota cars including next generation Fortuner and Prius. The upcoming compact crossover will directly compete against the likes of Honda Vezel, Nissan Juke and Hyundai ix25.

The design concept of the Toyota compact crossover is likely to be unveiled next year, while the production will commence from 2016. It is likely to be powered by the range of 4-cylinder engines. This vehicle might also get newly developed hybrid powertrains of different displacements, and the company might also source BMW diesel engine to power this compact SUV. Currently, the Japanese automaker only sells the Rush compact SUV in select Asian markets. It is quite early to comment whether the new compact SUV will come to India or not.
