Tata Motors, one of the top three leading automakers in the country has accomplished the first phase of manufacturing and selling compressed air cars under a license agreement inked with a France based company, MDI (Motor Development International).

The license agreement was mutually signed upon in the year 2007, for the use of MDI technology in the production of compressed air cars in India by Tata Motors and was intended to be commenced into phases. The first phase comprises of the transfer of MDI technology and the technical concept proof, while the second phase pertains to actualizing the technical concept and developing the compressed air engine to a vehicle with static applications.

At a press release, the company revealed, "The first phase of this programme-proof of the technical concept in Tata Motors vehicles-has now been successfully completed with the compressed air engine concept having been demonstrated in two Tata Motors vehicles."

MDI Technology uses a connecting rod system that is directed to outpour greater torque owing to reduced force applied on the crank. The technology has been developed to incorporate automatic gear shifts that are powered with an electronic system and the speed of the car is expected to be regulated with computer controls. The Tata Motors’ car manufactured using the MDI technology is said to be offering class leading mileage with economic running costs.

Tata Motors and MDI is collectively pacing ahead to foray into the second phase of the development of the technology and is aiming to utilize innovative technical processes in a bid to roll out the final product that will capitalize on the ready market demand in the forthcoming years.
